eBay sent out it's weekly newsletter to registered users with some handpicked products to highlight.
In the jewelry category they highlight this particular listing, and admittedly my blood pressure raises a few notches.
Well let's first look at the fact that this seller can offer 33 varieties of necklaces for .99 with Free Shipping.
For you or I here in the USA to sell this item, the shipping alone will cost us $1.10! Oh and that is only within the United States, not International. That also is for a first class envelope that is not flat, and does not include tracking.
To actually ship this as a first class parcel, which it technically is, it would be $2.45 which would include the necessary tracking required to maintain a Top Rated Seller status.
Now we have an extremely unfair advantage taking place by a seller who clearly has some special deal set up with the post office and can get or make their product for pennies.
But let's continue on as to why I am baffled by eBay's choice to promote this seller.
They are a Top Rated Seller according to their listing page. Yet I click over to their feedback and see this:
Thousands of unhappy customers are created by this seller each year!
Their positive feedback score is below 99% .
This is really a kick in the teeth to good, honest sellers who are not competing on volume of sales but on quality of sales. I know so many sellers who have lost their TRS because of a very tiny percentage of sales going amiss. Sometimes those reasons were not even in the seller's control!
Yet here you have a mass quantity seller who can maintain this status on pure numbers, but the real issue that concerns me is the reputation of eBay for that buyer.
How many of those over 6,000 unhappy customers will either never come back to shop again, or tell everyone they know about their crappy experience buying on eBay?
Sellers like this hurt all of us. Sellers like this hurt the eBay brand. I am truly baffled why eBay thinks this is a good thing to have on the site. The only explanation I can muster up is the almight dollar and bottom line on the profit and loss statement each quarter.
Now all of that being said, I want you, the seller who works hard to take care of their customer and build your business on quality and not quantity - to raise your head and realize this is not and never will be your competition. (How's that for a run on sentence?)
This is exactly why I teach sellers to build a brand, marketing and a solid customer base that knows YOU and isn't just shopping on eBay, they are shopping from a store that they know like and trust.
While I aspire to have a million dollar + business, there is no way I would do it at the expense of my customers experience. If my feedback ever looked like the below image, I would not be able to look in the mirror or sleep at night.
This was just a tiny snippet of the over 3,000 negative comments this seller has wracked up in a year's time!
We know these sellers exist on eBay. We know that China has an unfair advantage with the cost of goods production, and the special deal they've made with the US Postal service. My shock comes from the fact that eBay is promoting these sellers.
Might I mention also, if you look at the listing, all of their cross promotion items lead back to their own store. Gosh eBay, can I have that on all of my listings too please?
I don't mean to sound like sour grapes, but I have to confess this one did just really upset me. Not because it affects my business, but because I am listening to and helping small sellers every single day who are really struggling with getting their items seen and sold.
