This special guest post was written by my mom so you could read it in her own words.
2012 I was working part time as a home caregiver and having lots of feet issues. Danni had suggested for a long time that I should sell on eBay and I vehemently refused to even think about it. Meanwhile, I was crocheting and selling baby blankets on Etsy. I had a regular buyer who only wanted blankets crocheted with a specific yarn that was no longer available in stores; it was discontinued in 1982. So Danni suggested finding the yarn on eBay. I was astounded how expensive it was when I could find it, which wasn’t very often. Danni again began suggesting I should sell some of my other yarns--I had a house filled with all kinds of yarns--and look how much money I could be generating by selling on eBay. Finally, the end of January, 2012, I decided to give it a half-hearted try. Danni did training online with me, teaching me how to list, how to photo, how to ship...With her help, I listed a few single skeins of yarn and they sold almost immediately. I learned very quickly that I hadn’t paid attention to Danni’s instructions about pricing/costs and I actually lost money on the first few sales. Danni was my mentor daily, teaching techniques and all the specifics, and was always there with answers for my constant questions. Danni sent me a large box of inventory with yarn, needlecraft kits, plush animals, linens, toys, etc. And my business began in earnest.
May 2012 Danni sent me plane tickets to come to visit her in Las Vegas. For 3 days we worked on opening my store, shopping for inventory at yard sales, thrift stores...and had a great time with the intense training and spending time with the grandkids. I went home with a whole new outlook for my business and got to work to get it running smoothly, with Danni still available for my barrage of questions. I was having so much fun and seeing how I could have been doing this for a long time already with great success. I did so well that first year, I was able to quit my part-time caregiving job. I even got brave and tried an auction--2 skeins of a beautiful lavender yarn--that ended up in a bidding war and went up to $54--for 2 SKEINS OF YARN! This got me a place in a book by another eBay coach who was writing a book about what sells and how sellers become successful on eBay in all the categories. That particular experience led me to listen to Danni’s advice about pricing high, to include free shipping, fees, etc. worked into prices. I went from asking $39.99 for my blankets to $99.99. I have sold more at that price than at the older cheaper price. I attracted a different type buyer. Danni taught me how to identify my ideal buyer too.
After moving permanently to Las Vegas in 2014, I built my business up to almost 800 items and was selling everything that you could find in Grandma’s house--figurines, plush, pet clothing, baby items, clothing, linens, needlecrafts, toys…..As time went by and Danni was giving continued training, we decided I should narrow my nitch to needlecrafts--yarn, needlecraft kits, handmade items, and later fabric. I attended all of Danni’s video shows, webinars, conventions, and got continued hands-on training as time allowed from Danni. She has never been stingy with her expertise nor knowledge. She has always been more than willing to share it with everyone who wanted it.
I'm currently building up Etsy again with my handmade blankets. I know eBay is always there to be fired up once again, but heck at 74 I'm enjoying a little retirement!
